P3 Target Audiance and Potential Market Position (Based on Existing Products)

Target Audience and Potential Market Position Based on Existing/ Similar Products
I have looked at some products on the market that are similar to my short film idea "Look To The Future". This should hopefully give me and idea of how well my short film could potentially do if it was given the same publicity as some of the short films I have looked at here.

TITANIC
The first film that I have decided to look at is one of the most famous films of all time; Titanic. I chose to study this film because it's in the same genre as my short film idea and it has a similar story line with the couple being in love but then something happens and one of the dies.
(BASED ON IMDbPro)

As you can see Titanic had a much bigger budget then the film that I would be making which means that it is more likely to do well in the film charts but in terms of the films genre, it is in the top 500 films along with many other romantic tragedy films, which suggests that people enjoy watching this type of film and therefore it should do quite well.

Titanic was distributed through cinema's and is now available on DVD, on websites like Netflix and Amazon Prime and it has been shown on TV many times.

HOTEL CHEVALIER
Hotel Chevalier is a romantic short film from 2007. There isn't much information available about how much money was spent on making the film however when watching it you can see that it has been made professionally and has probably had a lot of money spent on it.
The reason I have used this one as an example is because according to IMDb it is the most popular short film of all time and it is also a drama with a bit of romance in it. That's why I think my short film has the potential to do well.
Hotel Chevalier was uploaded onto YouTube and is available on DVD.

MY SHORT FILM'S POTENTIAL
Based on this research I think that my short film does have the potential to do well. My research on the Titanic suggest that people like Romantic Tragedy and they like the storyline and the Hotel Chevalier research has shown that uploading a film to YouTube is a good way to distribute if I want it to do well. However I don't have the funding/ budget available that these films had to produce/ market their films. Because of this my film will not do anywhere near as well but I do think it has the potential to do well in it own league.
I would like to hope that if I started out by putting my short film on YouTube, there is the chance that a director might find it and decide to create it as a 30 minuet TV show.

P5 Filming Locations IDEA 2

This is the location that we will be filming in for our "Saved in 2:20" idea.
Guisbrough Town Center
This is the only location we will be filming in for this film idea. This is a public place so there will be no legal issues or permissions needed to film there. Because it is a public place there is no legal issues with having random member of the public walking in the background. It is very easy to access because it's right next to college so we could carry all of the equipment over there without too much hassle.

P5 Budget and Costings IDEA 2

Budget and Costings for "Saved In 22"
There aren't many cost's involved in this idea since it doesn't involve any travel costs. There would be a £20 cost for loaning the camera and the camera equipment but other then that there will be no other costs.

P3 Dates and Timescales IDEA 1 & 2

Dates and Time scales for "Look To The Future" and "Saved in 2:20"
It doesn't matter which short film we decide to make, we will be filming them around September time.
Look To The Future
Look To The Future will take 3 days to film because of the amount of different locations. These days would be weekends. So we would most likely film on the 6th, 7th and 13th.

Saved In 2:20
This short film will take a lot less time to film because it's all shot in one location and there is practically only one scene. This means it would only take one day to film and therefore we would most likely do this on the first weekend in September which is the 6th.

P5 Risk Assessment IDEA 1

P5 Relevent Legal and Ethical Issues IDEA 1 & 2

I have thought about all the Legal and Ethical issues that need to be thought about when making a short film.
Estimated BBFC Age Rating:
I think that this short film will get a rating of PG. This is because there are no inappropriate references to anything like drugs or sex. There is mild violence and a small head wound which wont be focused on which is why I think it would be a PG and not a U.
Copyright Material:
We will be careful not to use anything that is copyrighted within our film. This can be done easily by simply creating everything ourselves. This way we don't have to check up on if something has copyright on it or not. For example, we will create our own music and sound effects instead of downloading someone else's because they might have copyrighted it .
Permissions for Filming on Location:
For all the locations that aren't public property, we have visited the locations and asked for permission to film there. We have also gotten them to sign permission forms so we can prove that we are allowed to be there.
Guisbrough Library:
FORM IN FOLDER
Consent forms for actors:
We also decided to get written consent from the actors that they were okay with being the footage being used for our short film.

Mike (Micheal Schnider):

P5 Feedback IDEA 1

When we presented out Short Film Idea we asked for feedback about how we could improve our idea.
We didn't get too much feedback on our idea so we took on the feedback that we got from the people we presented too but we also looked at it critically our selves so that we could develop it as much as possible and make it the best we could.
FEEDBACK FROM PEERS:
Make sure it's not too long
When I was given this feedback, I read back over the story synopsis and realised that the film could be very drawn out. So to tackle this, when writing the script I will be careful to not make it to long or drawn out. As long as I get to the point across about what's going on, it doesn't have to be any longer. I will make effective use of sound and camera to get across themes, feelings and emotions.
Don't make it too gory
We had already decided before we presented our idea to limit the amount of blood etc that would be seen after Mike is hit by a car. We wanted to keep the age rating down and get more views. Not many people want to see loads and loads of gore. We should have made this clearer in the presentation.
Make sure people know that the couple are together at the beginning because it might not be obvious if they are just hanging around the town.
It is important to the story line that the audience realise that the couple are together. When they are in the town we plan to have them holding hands etc so that people can see that they are more than just friends. Hopefully we will manage to make it look like a date.

P4 Presentation IDEA 1 & 2

This is the presentation that me and my group presented to show people our idea for the short films.

P3 Sample Material For "Look To The Future" Idea

I have made sample material for my "Look To The Future Idea"

SCRIPT:

SAMPLE SCRIPT
“LOOK TO THE FUTURE”
It’s day time. Chloe and Mike are walking down a long road next to each other talking. Mike is on the side of the road. He is fiddling with a ring behind his back. There aren’t many cars.
Mike:  Do you ever think about your future?
Chloe: (laughs) What?
Mike: Well you know, like when you grow up
Chloe: Do you mean like what job I want and stuff
Mike: Yeah I guess but I kind of meant like when your older and you have a house and kids
Chloe laughs again and stops walking. She turns to look at him. Mike stops too. They stand facing each other Mike’s backs facing the road. He still has the ring in his hand.
Chloe: (Still laughing) Where’s this going?
Mike: Well I just…
Chloe starts walking again cutting Mike of and Mike follows her.
Chloe: Well I don’t really mind where I live. I want two kids and a dog…
She looks at Mike.
Chloe: Is that what you mean?
Mike: What about… (nervous) who you want to be with for the rest of your life?
Chloe: What-
She is about to continue when the ring drops out of Mike’s hand and onto the road. Mike runs out to get it and doesn’t look. A car comes round the corner.
Chloe: (SHOUT) MIKE!
The car hits into Mike but the camera focuses on something else so you don’t see the actual collision.
There is a moment’s pause where everything is slowed down. The camera is focusing on Chloe’s face.
Chloe runs out to Mike and kneels next to him. He is laid on the floor and he has blood on his face. Other people start crowding round.
Extra: (SHOUT) SOMEONE CALL AN AMBULANCE
Mike: (Slowly and quietly) I love you
Chloe just stares at him. He moves his hand slowly and holds her hand. The camera shows a close up of this.
Chloe jumps when he touches her arm like she’s just woken up.
Chloe: (Questioningly, nearly crying) You’re going to be okay? I know you are. It’ll be fine.
Chloe starts crying and people start crowding round.
Mike closes his eyes and you can hear ambulance sirens. Chloe takes her hand of his and looks at it. She has Mike’s ring on her finger. She stares at it as the scene fades out to black.

P5 Filming Locations IDEA 1

Here is all the locations we would be filming on for our "Look To The Future" idea.
Whitby Town Centre:
Since this is a public area we don't need to get permission from anyone in order to film here. There should be no legal issues around filming here. Whitby town is easy to access by bus or car so we will be able to get there. It is also convenient because it is a very big place so we will be able to find places within the town where we can avoid busy streets filled with people.
Pannet park Playground, Whitby:
This is also a public area so again there is no need for us to gain permission to film here. However we will have to be careful that if there are children playing in the park, that they are not in the background of any of our videos. If they are then we can either re-do the shot or speak to the child's parents and ask for permission to still use the clips. The playground is near the centre of Whitby and is easy to access by car. There is a car park right next to it so we would not have to carry equipment very far. However if we got the bus it would be about a twenty minuet walk up a hill carrying all of our equipment there.
White Point Road, Whitby:
White point road is also a public area so again no permission is needed to film here. Legal issues could arise if when cars drive past in the shot, we could get their number plates in the shot which people may not be happy with. To solve this we could have the camera's focus on the actors so hopefully the background will be blurred out enough so you can't actually read the number plates. Alternatively we could use quick shots and cropping to make sure that the shot never focuses on a car long enough for someone to read the plates. It's very accessible by car or bus so it would not be hard to get there with the equipment.
Guisbrough Library:
You do need permission to film in Guisbrough Library so we went to the Library and asked them about it. They agreed we could film there and they signed a form for us to confirm that. It is very accessible since it's not too far to walk from the college so we wouldn't have to carry the equipment far.
Saint Nicholas Church, Guisbrough:
When we film at the church, we will just be filming a scene outside of it with the church building in the background. Because of this we may not need permission since we are on public property. However we will visit the church and ask them about it just to make sure we can legally film it. The church is also very convenient and accessible because it is right next door to the college.

P3 Target Adudiance of My Short Films

The Target Audience for my idea's for short films.
The target audience that I am aiming for in my short film is the same target audience for most short films that I have already spoken about in my prezi's. This is teenagers ages 13+ and young adults up until around 22. I think that these are the kinds of people that I should be aiming my films at because these are the kinds of people most likely to actually watch them.

This is because when you are around this age, you have a lot more spare time on your hands compared to someone who works full time or has a family. Therefore you would have more time to watch films like this. If you are a busy person then you are not going to bother to sit down and watch a random short film that you saw on YouTube. However if you are aged between 13-22 and you see something on YouTube then usually you will have nothing else you need to be doing and will therefore click on it and watch the short film.

Another reason I think this age group is a good one to aim for when making a short film is that they are the age group that uses social media the most. They spend a lot of time trawling though their news feed or the latest video's looking for something to entertain them. So this is a perfect opportunity to give them something to watch that they will be entertained by.

I feel like I have made my idea's appealing to this audience by making them entertaining. I feel like people of this age don't want to be educated, they want to be entertained. There is romance, drama and some serious issues in each of my short film idea's so it's appealing to them but it also teaches them something without them realising.

P5 Budget and Costing IDEA 1 & 2

BUDGET AND COSTING
This is how much everything we need for the film will cost us.

Studio/Equipment hire:£20 (Deposit)
Costume/ Prop hire: To Be Arranged
Actors/ Actress rates: £0 (Travel Expenses)
Make-up artist/ drivers/ etc: £0
Other Expenses: Travel - £50 per day x 2 days = £100

SUB TOTAL: £120 -
                       20
TOTAL: £100

IF WE MADE THIS FILM IN THE INDUSTRY
I have looked at how much it would cost us to create the film as students on a minimum budget. However if we were going to make this film to an industry standard then this is what the costing's would look like:

P5 Equipment Booking Form IDEA 1 & 2

EQUIPMENT BOOKING FORM

Description Of Use
The equipment that we borrow will be used for making out short film. We need this specific equipment in order to make the film look professional. We will need to use the equipment for around three days in September time (Dates still to be arranged).

Equipment We Will Need
We will need to lend tracks for the tripod from the college and a Canon 1100D camera. We already own one Canon 1100D Camera and a Tripod.

Name Of Contacts
We will be lending the equipment from Prior Purglove College. However we do already have some of the the equipment for example we have a camera and a tripod.

Which scenes?
IDEA 1
For the scenes that we are filming at Whitby Town Centre, White Point Road in Whitby and Guisbrough Library, we will need Two Camera's, a tripod and the tracks.

When we film in the studio we will need a tripod, tracks, Two camera's and the studio lights.

When we film at Pannet Park and Saint Nicholas Church we will just need the tripod and a camera.
IDEA 2
When filming in Guisbrough Town Center we will need a camera, tripod and tracks.

P5 Recce Check of Film Locations

Here we have gone to the location we would like to film and we have done a Recce Check on all the area's that we would like to film in.

WHITBY TOWN CENTER
Whitby town centre is a very pictureque town center. We chose to film here because it looks nice and it fits in with the story line.

SUSTINABILITY of the General Location
The pro's of filming at this location is that it looks nice and it set's a nice scene for the date at the beginning. It's easy to access and it's not too busy to film in if we go at the right times.
ISSUES
Some of the problems with Whitby town centre for filming include busy traffic which could cause a problem if we are filming and cars are trying to get down the streets, the floors are uneven in places which could cause a tripping hazard and sometimes the town does get busy so people getting in the way.

DECISION
We made the decision that we are going to use Whitby town centre to film in due to risks being minor and outweighing the possessives.

P5 Short Film Planning IDEA 1

We chose to use the "Look to the future" idea for our project.
RISK ASSESMENT
Brief description of location
The first location is around Whitby town centre. We chose this location as it look's nice, it's easy to get to and it will be busy and therefore realistic. Our second location will be a large but quiet road in Whitby. This is so that we can film on the road safely but at the same time the road will look busy. Parts of this scene will be done against the blue screen. The third location will be I Guisbrough library. This is because we needed somewhere that looked official and looking like a hospital waiting room. We couldn't use an actual hospital waiting room because it wasn't appropriate. The fourth and fifth locations will be outside saint Nicholas Church in Guisbrough and in the new park in Whitby. We have chosen these locations for the flash backs because they look the part and are easy to get to.
Transport arrangements
We would all be getting the X93 bus to Whitby from Guisbrough.
Risk Assessment
To be completed on 20/05/2014
PLANNING A FILM SHOOT
What is the purpose of your film shoot?
The purpose of this film shoot is to create a short film that will warn people and make people aware of safety on the roads.
Are these on location or within a studio?
Most of the film will be shot on a location but for the scene where the boy is hit by a car we will have to film in a studio since it would be too dangerous to actually have him being hit by a car. Special effects will need to be used here.
Have you got permission to work their?
All the locations that we are planning to work in are public locations so we automatically have permission to film there. Then the studio is in college so the college will allow us to use it at designated times. The only place that we will have to specifically ask to use it the Library. However this shouldn't be a problem.
What equipment must you use and why?
Firstly we will need a camera because we need something to film on. The camera we will use will be a Canon 1100D DSLR. Next we will use a tripod to avoid the camera shaking when we are trying to film. Thirdly we need tracks for the tripod to run along so that when we have shots where the camera is moving, it looks smooth and professional and not shaky. We will also need a blue screen so we can add effects to scene that would be too dangerous to actually film. Finally we will need editing equipment and a computer to edit the film once it is shot.
How will you use it safely?
The equipment that I will use isn't particularly dangerous equipment. It will be basically common sense used to make sure that it is all used safely. I will do a risk assessment and recce check later on.
What legal and ethical considerations must be made for you film?
All of these considerations will be made when writing the script. We will have to make sure that we do not include and offensive words or phrases. For example swear words or words that imply racism, sexism, homophobia ect...
We will also have to make sure that the story line isn't offensive by looking out for similar themes in the storyline. It may also be useful to have some text at the very beginning or the very end stating that the story line is original and any links to other story lines or characters are coincidental.
What editing software/ techniques will be used to finalise the film?
